Hunger and the Environment
You might be deeply concerned about the environment - especially global warming.
Or you might be very concerned about hunger in America. Or both might be equally important to you. Wouldn't it be great if working to solve one also helped to solve the other? Read on. Millions of backyard gardeners often grow far more produce than they can use. Some give it away, some compost it and some simply throw it in the trash. According to the EPA, produce thrown into the garbage not only adds to our landfill challenge, it also releases methane into the atmosphere ... a global waming gas with twenty times the impact of CO2. The AmpleHarvest.org campaign enables backyard gardeners with extra produce to find food pantries in their neighborhood and then donate their extra produce to it. The garden bounty donated to a local food pantry not only helps to diminish hunger in America, it also helps to diminish the methane released from garbage dumps. The AmpleHarvest.org campaign is now focused on reaching and registering as many food pantries across America as possible - and you can help. Call the local houses of worship in your community. Contact the social services agencies. Contact the local food bank (see www.feedingamerica.org for information on the foodbank nearest to you). Reach out to your county or state Health or Social Services agencies. Ask them for information about food pantries in your neighborhood. Once you have found one, contact them to find out their hours. Then visit them with a copy of the Food Pantry Information printout and encourage them to register on AmpleHarvest.org. Once registered, the AmpleHarvest.org web site will provide the pantry with their first visibility on the Internet.... enabling them to receive more produce and store bought donations from their local community. Lastly, please encourage your friends and family acorss America to do the same as you have. Every food pantry registered on AmpleHarvest.org brings us one step closer to dimimishing hunger in America, and oh yea.... global warming too. |
